Stephanie Crawford
United Kingdom

Stephanie began quilting, like so many others of her generation, with Laura Ashley fabrics in the 1970s. Life, children and work intervened and she did not seriously return to quilting and textile art until she was approaching retirement.
She felt she wanted to stretch herself, so took the C & G certificate followed by the Diploma. Studying for the Diploma worked well for her. She was able to try many different techniques and styles and, one day, realised that she knew in which direction her style was developing.
Stephanie’s style would generally be described as pictorial. She is influenced by things she observes in everyday life and takes a great many photographs, whether walking the dog locally, or travelling in the UK or abroad. She is especially interested in light and perspective and loves buildings. Sometimes Stephanie likes to be a little controversial and make a point. At other times she wants the viewer to make up their own mind about what is going on in the piece.
Her usual method of working is to sketch her idea and then to draw in pencil onto white cotton. She paints with fabric paints and then free motion stitches using a lot of different threads. Stephanie usually works in a small series.
