Gillian loves to travel and always takes masses of photos of views and people, capturing her travelling experiences on her phone — no need for a fancy camera. She likes to photograph the things many people miss unless they really start to look.
Gillian uses her travel photos as inspiration for the Journal Quilts she has made every month since October 2007. These Journal quilts are usually around A4 size and to date she has made more than 120.
During lockdown she started to make small photograph sized quilts that could be joined together to make a fabric sketchbook or a larger art quilt. Each new quilt has a theme. Gillian says, “I love making them, each one, happy memories of a recent holiday or adventure. Each rectangle is stitched and painted, sometimes with additional fused appliqué and then they are all joined together with zig zag stitching.” She loves working with bright and vibrant colours and always uses natural fabrics — cotton, wool, felt and linen as the base.
She is an experienced teacher and loves to share her skills, experience and enthusiasm for quilting with her students. Gillian has received invitations to teach and exhibit her quilts all over the world and has been awarded many prizes for her art quilts.
