Alison Charlton
Australia

Alison’s early years in Far North Queensland surrounded by rainforest and crater lakes, instilled in her a love of plants and nature.
Following a long career in Plant Biology, Alison transitioned into creating textile art. She is particularly drawn to surface design and has always loved ancient techniques such as indigo dyeing, shibori and cyanotype.
Beginning with a piece of white or black fabric and influencing each stage of the design appeals to Alison. She uses many techniques in her art practice including, indigo and fibre-reactive dyeing, shibori, cyanotype, wax resist, breakdown printing, screen printing, painting, stencilling and hand stitching.
Drawing inspiration from social observations, emotions and the natural world, allows Alison to create pieces that have a ‘story to tell’. She also enjoys exploring work in a series because this allows her to further develop a concept.
Alison is an active member of several exhibiting textile groups including: SAQA, Ozquilt Network, Reddy Arts, Textile Art Group (TAG) and Magic Carpet Artists. Her art has been selected for both International and National juried exhibitions.
